Pannetone French Toast

This time of year Pannetone is everywhere! This sweet, almost brioche type dough, tastes like a fluffy bread/fruitcake that is laced with candied fruits and raisins.

The minute you open the box and unwrap it, you're hit by the most intoxicating smell! I rarely buy these because my hubby could literally eat the whole thing within a day. He tears off piece by piece, and before you know it, it's all gone!

This time I hid the box from him because I knew I was going to make french toast with it for our breakfast yesterday. If you haven't tried it this way, I highly suggest that you do, it's way beyond good!!!! and it's perfect for a special occasion.
I usually whisk up 1 egg per slice, you'll find that it really soaks up the egg mixture. Add in some milk and half and half, or cream, pour in some pure vanilla, and maybe a touch of cinnamon. Melt your butter in a large pan, and cook till nice and dark golden brown. Serve with warmed real maple syrup.

Needless to say, the hubby was very happy, and so was I!

Buon Appetito!!!

Oh my gosh-that's what we had today too! I used eggnog that needed used instead of milk or cream in with the eggs-added a little more freshly grated nutmeg, some cinnamon and a splash of almond extract....HEAVEN on a plate!
You're so right about Panettone....the aroma when the box is open is over the top! Growing up in an Italian household-it brings back all kinds of fond memories of home!
Oh-and bread pudding made with this is pretty darned special too!!! :)

What a perfect way to use Panettone. This looks absolutely delicious. I'm going to go buy one as soon as I can get out of my driveway. Still snowed in.

Happy New Year.

Great idea! I was going to make break pudding, but since my daughter and son-in-law are spending the night here tonight I think I'll follow your lead and make french toast with mine in the morning.

Marie - THIS IS CRAZY! I just NOW posted Panettone French Toast and came over to visit you. And to tell you I made your roasted carrots with gremolata that was a huge success. We are definitely on the same wavelength!! The only difference is I had a different brand, Madi. Too funny.
And just last month we made a similar-looking turkey soup.
Glad to hear you are enjoying the holidays!

I am like your hubby, Marie: I can't be trusted with an open panettone. When I lived in Milan, in December the air smelled like it. Making French toast with it is a really great idea.

Great round-brown colour on the toast, si si!

The reason I haven't bought any of this stuff this year is because I knew I would eat it all. Guess I'll have to see if I can find some left in the store now.

I have just a little of my pannetone left...thanks for reminding me :)
That does look yummy!

Now why have I never thought of French toast made with panettone?? That looks out of this world! I love panettone, but I usually just have it toasted, with butter. I must try French toast.

Happy new year, all the best in 2009!
